The CWS Policy Insights Series publishes practical, policy-oriented analysis in accessible form across the full range of CWS research topics. Protecting Women's Agency in the Middle East

In this policy brief published by the Center for War Studies, Dr. Shilan Fuad Hussain analyses gender-based violence (GBV) against women and girls in the Middle East and the Kurdistan Region of Iraq in particular, focussing on what her research coins the ‘patriarchal trifecta’: forced/arranged marriages, honour-based violence, and female genital mutilation. Her poignant observations and recommendations based on fieldwork with survivors and perpetrators, give decision-makers revelatory insights on the women who continue to suffer in silence.
