On Wednesday 17 November from 11.30 – 13.00 in Room U91 Elena Korosteleva from the University of Kent will give a talk on the situation in Belarus linking it to her research on resilience and complexity. The presidential election held on 9 August 2020 and the subsequent popular mobilization marked the end of an era in the history of post-Soviet Belarus. Cautious and apolitical for three decades, Belarusian society seems to have awakened in a short space of time observing a profound transformation of state-society relations taking them to a qualitatively new level of self-awareness and self-organisation. This transformation however resulted in a gulf between the state/power institutions and the society itself. The need for conciliation is urgent to avoid further incarceration, torture and a possible annexation of the country by ‘friendly’ Russia to ensure its stabilisation. We will explore change and pathways for conciliation from a resilience perspective, explicating ‘the local’ as a vehicle for change.
