SDU Appoints Anton Pottegård as Professor in the Pharmaceutical Field

Pharmacist, PhD and DMSc Anton Pottegård (32) has been appointed as Professor of Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmacoepidemiology at Department of Public Health, University of Southern Denmark (SDU).

With an impressive speed, Anton Pottegård has become an acknowledged scientist within the area of register-based research on drugs, and he has, despite of his young age, formidable skills when it comes to disseminating his research which has also made him known outside the university framework.

Anton Pottegård’s research interest lies within the use of drugs in the broadest sense. Mostly, his research takes its point of departure in Danish or international health registry data, where he seeks to describe both known and unknown side effects of treatment with drugs. He is also the Head of Research at Hospital Pharmacy Funen at Odense University Hospital where he and his group are working on challenges in connection with sector transitions in the Danish health services and with “deprescribing", that is, reduction of potentially unnecessary medicine particularly for patients nearing the end of their life.

Anton Pottegård has been involved in works on diabetes, psoriasis, ADHD, drug abuse, brain haemorrhage and much more – in collaboration with more than 400 scientists and clinicians form all around the world. Often the point of departure is the strong Danish register data or similar data from other countries. In particular, he has been interested in cancer as a potential side effect of long-term drug use.

He has published more than 200 scientific articles, always having drugs as their focal point, in both minor and major journals. Examples include the risk of brain haemorrhage among users of blood-thinning drugs, consumption patterns of psychopharmacological drugs for children (especially ADHD medications) and potential interactions between various drugs. Furthermore, he is, together with his colleague Tore B. Stage, author of the textbook “Praktisk Farmakologi” (Practical Pharmacology).

Anton Pottegård completed his bachelor’s degree at University of Copenhagen but has since then been affiliated with SDU, where he completed his master’s degree in 2011, became research assistant and later PhD-student. However, in parallel to this, he has been affiliated with other places both as an independent consultant, as development pharmacist at København Sønderbro Apotek, briefly at Rigshospitalet, and, since 2016, as Head of Research at Hospital Pharmacy Funen at Odense University Hospital.

Anton Pottegård lives in Roskilde. Privately, he is married to his youth sweetheart Line, and together they have two daughters. The last name, Pottegård, he has from Restaurant Pottegården, a family restaurant in Odsherred which his parents have run for 43 years and where Anton Pottegård is born and raised.
