Assistant Professor Anne Loft has headed a research group at SDU since October 2023. She received her PhD from SDU in 2016 studying the transcriptional networks controlling white, brite, and brown adipocyte development and function. After this, she joined the laboratory of Prof. Stephan Herzig at the Helmholtz Diabetes Center in Munich as a postdoctoral fellow and later project team leader studying the molecular mechanism of organ dysfunction in different obesity-related disorders. In August 2020, she was recruited back to the Center for Functional Genomics and Tissue Plasticity (ATLAS) at BMB and in september 2022 she was appointed junior group leader in ATLAS.
Research in Annes group focuses on understanding how different adipose tissue depots contribute to the development of obesity-related comorbidities, such as metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD). A special interest is on identifying transcriptional drivers that regulate disease-activated gene programs in cellular subpopulations in the adipose tissues and potentially the crosstalk with other organs during disease progression. For this, Annes group apply single cell genomics technologies on clinical biopsies combined with advanced computational methods. Her group is further dedicated to developing optimized tools for targeting of specific cellular subpopulations within the adipose tissue. The goal of the lab is to inform new rational therapeutic strategies for treatment of obesity-related disorders through a deep mechanistic understanding of these diseases.
