My research interests are to understand the evolutionary biology and adaptive ecology of benthic foraminifera and their relation to the geologic history of the Earth. For this purpose, I use both geological/paleontological and biological/ecological approaches. In particular, I have actively introduced experimental methods into the field of foraminiferal research. I have also preferred to visit biased marine environments such as oxygen minimum zone, hydrothermal vent sites and hadal trenches with HOV and ROV. I organized more than 10 submersible dive cruises including Japan, Marianas, Palau, and Tonga Trenches, Arabian Sea Oxygen-minimum Zone, and South Atlantic Deep-sea Plateau. Up to the present time, I have published more than 275 papers and 24 books.
