Environmental Humanities on a Mission

Humans are the cause of the climate crisis and hold the key to its solution. Yet, the human aspect of the transition to a sustainable future often takes a back seat to technical invention and political regulation in green research missions. How can we integrate culture, habits, engagement, and visions for the future into the overall framework for environmental research to strengthen public support and commitment to the green transition?

Humans are the cause of the climate crisis and hold the key to its solution. Yet, the human aspect of the transition to a sustainable future often takes a back seat to technical invention and political regulation in green research missions.

How can we integrate culture, habits, engagement, and visions for the future into the overall framework for environmental research to strengthen public support and commitment to the green transition?

The humanities faculties and research sections at six Danish universities invite everyone engaged in environmental humanities to a research conference that focuses on the missions, goals, and contributions of environmental humanities to the green transition?

The conference will explore how Environmental Humanities can create new arenas of participation, pluralize ways of knowing, valuing, and relating to nature and the environment, and offer new narratives for just and fair green transitions. How do we strengthen public support and engagement in the green transition, so that it is reflected in the CO2 accounts? In what ways can the humanities use mission-driven solution-oriented research to affect change?

Danish universities nationwide have formulated four green research missions on education, democracy, global justice, and possible futures that we would like to deliberate on with you. Together, we shall unfold specific environmental humanities research initiatives, and take a deep-dive into the discussion of mission-driven research in the humanities with insights from Danish and international experts:

New Narratives and Visions for a Green Future: Developing innovative narratives and visions that inspire a sustainable future that people can relate to. Using aesthetic, historical, and philosophic research to show the entanglement of landscapes, natural resources, humans, animals, and plants.

Just and Fair Green Transition, Locally and Globally: Advocating for an equitable and fair shift towards sustainability on both local and global scales. Qualifying societies’ reflection on and work with global justice and building diverse relations.

Democratic Embedding of the Green Transition: New (and old) forms of democratic engagement and inclusivity; infrastructures of participation; democratic inclusivity; challenging traditional boundaries between research, policy, civil society, and local embeddedness.

Green Education, Learning and Capacity Building: Fostering environmentally conscious education at all levels to promote sustainability awareness, ecological sensitivity and education and transformative classrooms.

We look forward to unfolding specific environmental humanities research projects and initiatives with you and delving into the discussion of mission-driven research in the humanities with insights from Danish and international experts.

The conference takes place on 19 April from 9 am to 5 pm in the Nanna Berg Auditorium at South Campus, University of Copenhagen, Njalsgade 76, 2300 Copenhagen S.

We look forward to seeing you at Environmental Humanities on a Mission: Enabling Sustainable Futures
