The role of mathematics in STEM
There is growing concern about the role of mathematics in STEM (Science Technology Engineering Mathematics). A concern that it will fade into the background and not get the attention it should have as a key component in all science subjects.
At Laboratory for STEM Education and Learning (LSUL), we are developing a tool for the development of courses of study in STEM, in which mathematics forms an integral part. The work is the preliminary result of a study consisting of a review of 4812 articles to identify STEM learning activities and of in-depth analyses of 37 articles with the focus being on the roles that mathematics is to play in integrated STEM activities.
