When criminals seize the state: how to get justice for murder and corruption

GUEST LECTURE by Matthew Caruana Galizia, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, software engineer, and director of the Daphne Caruana Galizia Foundation

Abstract

You’ve heard this before: “they’re playing judge, jury, and executioner!” But what happens when all three stop doing their jobs, and instead, start working for criminals? Matthew’s mother, Daphne Caruana Galizia was assassinated while investigating a complex, international corruption scheme stretching from Azerbaijan to Panama, but with a gas project in the EU at its heart. Matthew will talk about the forensic, political, legal, and journalistic effort that cracked the murder case, and the humungous effort that is now required to make sure that justice is comprehensively achieved.

ABOUT MATTHEW CARUANA GALIZIA

Matthew Caruana Galizia is the director of the Daphne Caruana Galizia Foundation. He worked at the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), developing the technology that enabled major investigations such as Panama Papers and Paradise Papers. ICIJ and its partners won the Pulitzer Prize for explanatory reporting in 2017. In 2018, Matthew left ICIJ to continue working on the case around the killing of his mother, Daphne Caruana Galizia, who was assassinated in 2017 following her investigations into corruption in Malta. Since then, Matthew Caruana Galizia and his family have worked tirelessly to tackle impunity and unveil the truth about Daphne’s death.

This lecture takes place at the DIAS auditorium. The lecture will unfortunately not be live-streamed because he will be mentioning ongoing criminal proceedings.[/url]
