Course description
The aim of this 2½ day course is to give you the tools to make the information in your text flow well so that your message is clear and stands out. The learning activities include lectures/tips, group tasks, online tasks, and critical analysis of own text. The examples and exercises relate to the health sciences, but students from other faculties are welcome to attend.
The course is open to students who have completed the English Grammar in Context course offered by KI/IRS or the Graduate School of Health Sciences.
The Logic of Writing course will focus on
- Logical flow of information in a text
- The function of paragraphs and how to create coherent paragraphs
- Linkages between the sentences of a paragraph
When you have completed this course, you will have obtained
- Knowledge about structural links of a text and paragraphing
- The skills to analyse cohesion and linkage in a text
- The competence to revise a text to create logical information flow and effective paragraphs
Day 1 and Day 2 are full days in-class. Day 3 is a half-day and is run online via Zoom.
As preparation for the course, you will need to
- Watch a 5-minute video about Sentence types in English
- Do an online assignment on ‘Strategies for improving sentence clarity’ to revise the standard English word order.
You gain course credits by completing all course assignments and participating actively in all course days.
Course fee
The course is free of charge for PhD students enrolled in Universities that have joined the Open market agreement and/ or the NorDoc agreement.
