An introduction to systematic reviews

Course description

This one-day course is intended to give the participants an insight into the world of systematic reviews; the various types, the varying quality, and how to quickly scan a systematic review article to see if it could be a useful document.

It consists of a mixture of instructions and workshop activities.

Please note that it does not include practical assistance on, for example choice of software, how to perform your own systematic review, or how to fill out the PROSPERO application.

Intended learning outcome

When you have participated in this course you will have learnt:

  • to differentiate various types of reviews
  • to identify the various elements in a systematic review
  • the process of a systematic review
  • to judge the structure and contents of a systematic review

However, if you need help to conduct a systematic review, you may contact the IRS/KI to see if you can get a place on the five-day course, which stretches over three months, in which individual coaching is provided.

Teaching methods

Instructions mixed with individual and group work using examples from the literature. Participants will need their PC, as they will have to find these examples via Pubmed. It is also a good idea for participants to prepare/bring some systematic reviews they find relevant in PDF or paper format for scrutiny and discussions.
