Mouse Surgery

Course description

The course is for students, scientists, technicians and external participants with a biomedical background. Participants are expected to have attended a course in laboratory animal science.

The goal of the course is to give the participants practical introduction into the principles and techniques of microsurgical techniques, using the mouse as an experimental model.

The course includes introductory lectures, live demonstration of individual microsurgical techniques which will be projected from the operating microscope onto the large monitor, total of 15 hours of practice with constant supervision by 4 teachers/instructors. In the final phase of the course the participants will be able to practice the surgery required for their research project.

Lectures: Topographical anatomy of a mouse, principles of mouse surgery, microscope use, surgical instruments, suturing, cannulation, mouse anaesthesia and analgesia, aseptic techniques and specific ethical considerations.

Practical exercises: Ex vivo suturing and vessel anastomosis. Laparotomy, splenectomy, nephrectomy, vessel dissection, end-to-end anastomosis of abdominal aorta, catheterizations techniques. This course includes 6 consultant hours for assistance in your own surgical project.

Intended learning outcome

Participants will gain knowledge of mouse topographical anatomy, basic principles of mouse surgery including the use of operating microscope, description of micro instruments and their handling.

Course fee

The course is free of charge for PhD students enrolled at SDU. For students from universities that have joined the Open market agreement the course fee is:

Cancellation

Please note that any cancellation of enrollment must be send to phd@health.sdu.dk 4 weeks before course start!

We are ordering the laboratory animals  exactly 2 weeks before course start and the number of ressources are calculated after number of participant. Therefore it is important that you kindly send us your cancellation at latest 4 weeks before course start!
