Biological data science and the analysis of ‘big data’ in biomedicine are rapidly evolving and expanding fields aimed at elucidating biological and biomedical challenges by detailed analysis of datasets using computer algorithms, databases and statistical tools.
Computational biomedicine thereby contributes to our understanding of complex biological processes in health and disease. The goal is to reveal novel features of complex biological and biomedical datasets, for example experimental data obtained by genomics, proteomics or imaging analysis of human cells or tissues. Such features include novel disease genes, mutations, protein-protein interactions, biomarkers for the early detection and diagnosis of disease or monitoring of propagation of disease and effects of treatment at population level-
