The aim is to enhance organizational and management studies with recent theoretical and methodological insights from contemporary multimodality research, anchored in the disciplinary traditions of applied linguistics and social semiotics, and enrich multimodality research through application to the multiplicity of conceptual issues and empirical phenomena modern organization and management studies deal with, and through its mostly sociological insights.
A central objective is the attempt to theoretically utilize contemporary multimodality research for the study of organizations in an integrated and systematic way. While a variety of scholars has acknowledged the fruitfulness of applying multimodal theorizing to organizational questions, they have done so only for individual, selected topics and from a variety of theoretical traditions, thereby leading to the emergence of an increasingly rich but rather fragmented field.
This project revolves around the conviction that a more holistic and systematic engagement with the topic, based on established traditions in multimodal research, is a necessary endeavour for pushing the interface between the two traditions further towards integration.
