REDUCTION

Type 2 Diabetes is a major health problem worldwide and 90% of the Type 2 Diabetes has Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) which exposes them to the risk of steatohepatitis and fibrogeneis, it is a problem that needs intervention. Type 2 Diabetes and NAFLD are closely correlated, and the metabolic syndrome plays an important role in both diseases. The main treatment methods for both conditions are diet and exercise, but the recommendations on which diet is the optimal fluctuate. Our overall hypothesis is that a Low Carbohydrate Diet with a high intake of mono- and polyunsaturated fats will improve Type 2 Diabetes and NAFLD.

The specific aim of this study is to investigate whether six months of a low carbohydrate diet with high fraction of monounsaturated fat, compared to Regular Diabetic Diet in patients with Type 2 Diabetes will improve Type 2 Diabetes, NAFLD, quality of life and gut dysbiosis.

The study design is a 6 months randomized controlled trial with 135 Type 2 Diabetes patients. 90 patients in the intervention group will be eating Low Carbohydrate Diet with a high intake of mono- and polyunsaturated fats, and the control group consisting of 45 patients will be eating Regular Diabetes Diet.

REDUCTION was initiated in 2017 and is funded by Novo Nordisk Fonden.
