Anticipating Governance in the Coming Multi-Order World (AGMOW)

The Project

Transformation of the international system is a rare but significant occurrence that is often accompanied by a heightened risk of political turbulence and war. The international system is currently in such a process of transformation as it is transforming into a system consisting of several international orders - a Multi-Order World. The arrival of the Multi-Order World will fundamentally alter the conditions for global order and governance.

The new system is different from previous international systems because it rests on a new global structure of relations. A return to past forms of governance and order-making is therefore not an option. A fundamental question is how new forms of cooperative global governance can be ensured.

AGMOW utilizes foresight methods to understand the drivers of change and processes of transformation and to anticipate how they might affect the prospects for global cooperative governance on some of the many challenges that will face the global international society in the coming years.
