In this essay Dr. Shilan Fuad Hussain review the United Nations aspirations for gender equality in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. Dr. Shilan Fuad Hussain is a Marie Curie Postdoctoral Fellow and an interdisciplinary researcher specializing in cultural analysis and gender studies. Her current work sits at the intersection of sociology and cultural analysis, and its symbiotic relevance to modern society. She has worked for over ten years with international NGOs, liaising with a diverse range of local, national, international, governmental and non-governmental officials, policymakers, bureaucrats, and civil society members conducting research on issues affecting the vulnerable members of society.

Feminist and Queer Perspectives on the Violence of Weaponised Security

In this essay Ray Acheson applies feminist and queer perspectives on the violence of weaponised security. Ray Acheson (they/them) is Director of Reaching Critical Will, the disarmament programme of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, for which they provide analysis and advocacy at the United Nations and other international forums on matters of disarmament. Ray also serves on the steering groups of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, which won the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize, Stop Killer Robots, and the International Network on Explosive Weapons.

In this essay Tara Zammit is looking at service through a different lens: ontological security, integration, and the British Armed Forces. Tara Zammit is a PhD Candidate in the Department of War Studies, King’s College London, researching ontological security, gender, and integration in the armed forces. She has been awarded the SSHRC-CRSH Department of National Defence MINDS Initiative Doctoral Award to undertake her research. She holds an MPhil in Asian and Middle Eastern Studies from the University of Cambridge (2019), and a BA (Hons.) in Peace, Conflict and Justice and Near and Middle Eastern Civilisations from the University of Toronto (2018).
