STATEMENT ON THE WAR IN UKRAINE
The steering committee of the Digital Democracy Centre strongly condemns the horrible act of war led by Putin. Our thoughts go out to all victims of the war. We stand in solidarity with Ukraine and Russians against the war.
The war is an attack on Ukraine’s sovereignty and independence. It is also an attack on democratic values. The DDC was launched to understand the role digital technologies play in democratic processes. We urge social media companies to show leadership in the conflict and take responsibility: Learn from the conflict, develop policies for future conflicts beyond Europe. We urge governments to work to ensure journalists’ safety and safeguard access to information for citizens in the regions. We urge fellow citizens to behave responsibly in sharing information and not contributing to spreading of disinformation and propaganda.
The war leads to a sense of powerlessness for many. If you can, consider donating to organisations doing important humanitarian work and to organisations reporting from the war zone.
We stand in solidarity with Ukraine.
