This project proposes a timely study of the energy market turmoil in Europe. Contributing to increasingly urgent discussions of ‘just transition’, we aim to theorize and investigate the current frontlines of transition in Europe and unpack their consequences on transitional livelihoods and politics of justice.
We build on two case studies of communities that are simultaneously experiencing, on the one hand, the rapid decline (and short-term resurgence) of carbon-intensive, coal-based energy production and employment and, on the other hand, the promises and realities of green investments, EU and national level just transition policies, and emerging labour markets.
