Cold storage

Cold storage, especially -80 freezers, is among the most energy intensive equipment and spaces in many laboratories.

In the spring of 2021, the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology participated in the International Laboratory Freezer Challenge and saved a total of 321 kWh/day compared to 26 danish homes, with a household of four.

The International Laboratory Freezer Challenge

It is a competition designed to promote best practice in cold storage management by, for example, encouraging:

Storing at the right temperature and not colder than necessary
Using room temperature sample storage whenever possible
Eliminating unneeded samples and creating an inventory for cold storage units

A freezer cleanout is a great way to mitigate energy consumption while saving time and effort in the future as organizing the freezers will make it easier to find samples and eliminating old materials will free up space for new samples, minimizing the need for a new freezer.

Sharing space with colleagues
Adjusting set points on -80C freezers to -70C

Chilling up the ultra-low freezer from -80 to -70 has two major benefits:  it can reduce energy consumption by 20-40%, and in doing so it can prolong the life of the freezer.  This means less down time and less risk that the samples will be compromised.

Defrosting freezers and vacuuming coils on freezers and refrigerators

Clearing frost build up saves energy, improves ease of access, and together with vacuuming the coils ensures the longevity of the freezer.
