Turning off equipment
The research sections identify which equipment can be turned off or put on an outlet timer.
Typically, equipment that requires lengthy calibration or has a lengthy start-up, like mass spectrometers, HPLCs or equipment with a magnet, are not good candidates. However, candidates could be chilled centrifuges, ovens, and heating blocks that require a certain temperature to be maintained.
Maintaining a set temperature, whether hot or cold, requires a lot of energy. Turning off these types of equipment when they are not in use can save a significant amount of energy. The same applies for Chemical fume hoods and sterile benches (LAF benches).
