3-year DeiC Postdoc Scholarship to Gard Olav Helle, mentored by Jørgen Ellegaard Andersen
Postdoc Gard Olav Helle from Centre for Quantum Mathematics, IMADA, has received DKK 3,2 million from The National Quantum Algorithm Academy (NQAA) under Danish e-infrastructure Consortium (DeiC) to fund a 3-year postdoc position, mentored by Centre Director Jørgen Ellegaard Andersen
The DeiC board of directors decided to create “The National Quantum Algorithm Academy “(NQAA), to support the development of the next generation of researchers to develop the next generation of algorithms and software related to quantum computers and quantum simulators. All applications were evaluated by the Danish Quantum Algorithm Academy Assessment Committee consisting of five scientists with strong research experience in the relevant areas.
One of the awarded candidates is Dr. Gard Olav Helle from Centre for Quantum Mathematics at Department of Mathematics and Computer Science. His awarded project is entitled “Towards improved weather and climate predictions via quantum computing” and is mentored by Centre Director and Professor Jørgen Ellegaard Andersen.
Towards improved weather and climate predictions via quantum computing
The project aims to develop and test quantum algorithms for specific applications in the field of weather and climate predictions. In close collaboration with domain experts from the Danish Meteorological Institute, they aim to determine ideal numerical methods for efficient implementation in a quantum computer. An overall objective is to develop methods allowing to simulate the shallow water equations, an important benchmark test in the field of weather prediction, on quantum hardware.
The project seeks to explore more theoretical methods building on the Madelung transform; a method recasting Navier-Stokes type equations in the shape of a Schroedinger equation.
Taking advantage of the unique competency at the Centre for Quantum Mathematics, the project aims to explore quantum computational methods outside of the standard quantum circuit model.
The project period is from September 1, 2024 – August 31,2027.
Congratulations to Gard and Jørgen.
