Data Visualization

In the course you will go through the following elements:

• Excellence of graphical design, including the do’s and don’ts.
• Discussion of visual design models.
• The What, Why and How in visual design.
• State-of-the-art visualization methods for numeric, geospatial, temporal, relational and textual data.
• Hands-on visualization session with online tools.

With the course in Data visualization you will be able to:

• Select appropriate visualization methods for given data sets.
• Reduce the level of distortion when creating visualizations.
• Take accurate visual design choices.
• Create visualizations with online tools.
• Discuss the visual output in relation to the underlying data.

Anyone who wants to learn how to create and use visualizations accordingly. Programming experience is not required.

Associate Professor Stefan Jänicke studies a wide range of issues in data visualisation. During the last years, he has gained experience in developing information visualization techniques and visual analytics tools within a number of interdisciplinary projects.

His research interests relate to information visualization with a focus on text- and geovisualization, on visual analytics and on designing visual interfaces to support research inquiries in application domains such as digital humanities and biology.

The course is a workshop with a duration of 4 hours.
