Project description

Background:
Patients with chronic muscle and bone pain are typically referred to treatment in orthopedic departments, and they are among the biggest patients group. The use of patient reported outcome (PRO) offers a way of surveying patients’ experience of the effect of surgery.

Objectives:
The objective is to investigate associations between the patients' mental health and their patients’ experience of treatment by patient reported outcome.

Methods:
The baseline for this prospective cohort study was before-surgery data, which were compared with data from two follow-up surveys at 12 and 52 weeks postoperatively. The study population consisted of patients with pain in the hip and the shoulder, as were referred to the orthopedic department for the first time.

Conclusion:
We are unable to predict patient's own report of outcome of operation by their pre-operative mental health. The hip patients' mental health, function and pain, and satisfaction were correlated after surgery at 12 weeks and 52 weeks.
