It is important to investigate the social inequality in health among Greenlandic children, as the early years are the foundation for well-being later in life. Although the majority of Greenlandic children thrive and live good lives, there are still many who experience health challenges associated with social position. We know that among youth from families with a lower social position, signs of mental illness, alcohol addiction and violence in the family are more prevalent. The Greenlandic authorities have for several years tried to prevent inequality with early interventions and the current public health program for the period 2020-2030 with a focus on all children living good and healthy lives. Despite this, there is currently no knowledge about the social inequality in health among young children in Greenland and the consequences of inequalities.
Purpose
The project aims to analyze the association between social group at birth and selected health parameters among 0 to 1-year-olds in Greenland.
Method
The project uses data from the Greenlandic Healthcaresystem. Before data can be retrieved, interviews are conducted with practitioners (doctors, health nurses and midwives) regarding their registration practice and the validity of the data held by the healthcare system. The interviews will then form the background for which data is obtained from the health care system.
Project period
The project period is:1/9-2023 - 31/12-2024. The results will be published in a scientific article in fall 2024
Funding
The project is funded by Helsefonden.
