Thomas Stauffer Larsen appointed clinical professor of haematology
The professorship is newly established and centred on the treatment of lymphoma. Professorships have been established as a combination position between the Department of Clinical Research, the University of Southern Denmark and the Department of Haematology at Odense University Hospital.
Thomas Stauffer Larsen's professorship should be seen as part of the major development in both more reliable diagnoses and better prognoses for the treatment of lymphoma. There is an increasing understanding of the biology of lymphoma, and more advanced laboratory methods have been introduced for the diagnosis and monitoring of lymphoma.
Not least with the development of more and more advanced treatments, including Chimera Antigen Receptor (CAR) T cells, the opportunities for patients with lymphoma have improved significantly. These advanced treatments are a form of immunotherapy in which the patient's own white blood cells (T cells) are genetically modified to specifically attack and destroy the diseased cells.
In 2013, Thomas Stauffer Larsen was employed as a consultant at the Department of Haematology at OUH and has since 2016 had the clinical professional responsibility for patients with lymphoma as a senior consultant responsible for the clinical situation. During this period, clinical research activity in the field has increased significantly, and the Department of Haematology. In addition to clinical research, Thomas Stauffer Larsen is active in epidemiological register-based research based on the Danish lymphoma database LYFO.
Thomas Stauffer Larsen graduated as a medical doctor from SDU in 2001 and was awarded his PhD degree in 2008 and has since his specialist recognition in 2013 worked with lymphomas, especially the aggressive B-cell lymphomas. He is an active player in a good scientific network in the Danish and Nordic lymphoma research environment
Another of his very important areas of activity is cellular therapy. Thomas Stauffer Larsen has been one of the pioneers behind the establishment of OUH as a CAR T-cell treatment center. Together with Professor Torben Barington from the Department of Clinical Immunology, Thomas Stauffer Larsen has overseen the establishment of the Centre for Cellular Immunotherapy of Haematological Cancer Odense (CITCO), which in 2019 was awarded the status of OUH Elite Research Centre.
Thomas Stauffer Larsen was born on April 21, 1974. He grew up in Taastrup outside Copenhagen, but now lives in Odense with his wife, Lisbeth. He is the father of two girls, aged 17 and 20.
