The Biomedical Laboratory is the central animal facility at the University of Southern Denmark. The laboratory is located at J.B. Winsløws Vej 23, 5000 Odense C, and has approximately 2,500 m2 animal housing, laboratories and surgical rooms.

Organizationally, the Biomedical Laboratory is part of the Department of Molecular Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences, but performs work for all institutes  at the University of Southern Denmark, Odense University Hospital and hospitals in Southern Denmark.

Profile

Service
The Biomedical Laboratory is a service department providing assistance in animal experiments. The department procures animals through own production and purchasing, takes care for animals and assists in research tasks like sampling and surgical intervention. The department also provides advise on questions regarding animal experiments, including animal models, experimental design and ethical issues.

Education
The department offers courses in laboratory animal science, which provide the necessary professional qualification to work with or obtain a project license for performing animal experiments according to Danish and European law. Also, courses in experimental microsurgery are offered. Moreover, the department facilitates surgical skills courses, such as operative and laparoscopic surgery for medical doctors in specialist training, and surgery courses for Odense University Hospital and regional hospitals.

Research
Research in comparative medicine and laboratory animal science concentrates primarily on model development, method improvement and welfare (refinement of animal experiments).  

A user's guide
This website contains practical information to researchers on the use of facilities at the Biomedical Laboratory. The user guide is primarily based on laws and regulations, and must be respected. Other issues are meant to provide the best possible service for researchers.
