Novo Nordisk Foundation grant PET/MRI scanner to University of Southern Denmark
Researchers from the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at University of Southern Denmark (SDU) have received a grant of DKK 17 million from the Novo Nordisk Foundation to acquire a new simultaneous preclinical PET/MRI scanner once they have moved into the new faculty buildings connecting SDU to Odense University Hospital.
The PET/MRI scanner will be used for scanning several biological processes in live animals. These can be used in research, as the combination of PET and MRI scans of animals' brains, their blood flow, etc. can be translated into humans and is increasingly used to make informed choices in drug development, treatment of tumors and a wide range of other therapeutic areas.
The scanner will be placed at the new and state-of-the-art preclinical imaging core facility at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) in the biomedical laboratory, which houses SDU's animal stable in Odense, and it has been acquired in close collaboration with the Department of Nuclear Medicine (PET) and the Department of Radiology (MRI) at Odense University Hospital (OUH), which ensures a high scientific level and facilities for experiments that have not previously been possible.

Meet the professor
Associate Professor Mikael Palner from the Department of Clinical Research at SDU has headed the application, which will be used for research purposes for a greater understanding of the human brain.
