Marcus Nicolson is originally from the Shetland Islands, which lie between the Scottish mainland and Norway. He is interested in the politics and cultural practices of borderzone regions and has recently relocated to South Tyrol to work with the EURAC team. He is a postdoctoral researcher based at the Institute for Minority Rights, EURAC, Bolzano. In his PhD project, Marcus used an ontological security theoretical framework alongside creative arts and narrative enquiry techniques to examine the lived experiences of young adult migrants in Glasgow, UK. This research has foregrounded individual perceptions of security, transnational identity negotiation, and the role of (im)migration narratives in sub-state contexts. In B-SHAPES, Marcus is excited to learn more about the role of narratives in shaping the politics of borderzone regions and to contribute his knowledge of creative arts research to the Work Package 4 team.
