The Research Unit of Spine Medicine plans and conducts research that is anchored in the clinic and based on clinical issues. We are part of strong national and international research communities, and we actively participate in teaching in the daily clinic and at the university.

The Research Unit of Spine Medicine comprises five senior researchers, including the research leader, alongside three PhD students and one scientific assistant. Additionally, the unit is supported by two adjunct professors. The research secretariat includes a research secretary, a data manager, and a project coordinator.

Our researchers have backgrounds in chiropractic, physiotherapy, and previously medicine. All are actively involved in the Spine Center's medical outpatient clinic, where they form an integral part of the clinical staff. The unit consistently includes 3-4 clinical lecturers, and we prioritise the production of 3-6 master's theses annually.

Our primary focus is to design and conduct research grounded in the clinical activities of the Spine Center, addressing real-world clinical issues. Simultaneously, we are engaged in robust national and international research collaborations. We also contribute actively to teaching students both at the Spine Center and the University of Southern Denmark.

Our mission is to produce high-quality research that is directly relevant to clinical practice and beneficial to patients with back pain, guided by our vision of "The right treatment for the right patient at the right time."

Our research is centred on the following areas:

  • Clinical tests and examinations, including objective functional assessments and pain measurements
  • Cross-sectoral patient pathways
  • Treatment mechanisms
