Associated Professor Janne Kudsk Klitgaard has since 2014 been a link between the Research unit at Department of Clinical Microbiology, Odense University Hospital and Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University of Southern Denmark (SDU). She obtained her Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from SDU in 2005. From 2005 until 2013 she was a postdoctoral fellow at SDU. In her research group, the focus is mainly on Staphylococcus aureus, a major human pathogen that frequently causes local and systemic infections. The great challenge with the bacterium is the development of multidrug-resistant clones that spreads globally and in some countries treatment of resistant bacterial infections are difficult or impossible. The problem is projected to be an ever-larger problem in the future and solutions to the antibiotic resistance problem is needed. The research strategy is to use helper compounds in combination with conventional antibiotics to cure bacterial infections as well as development of new antimicrobial drugs. One such helper compound is cannabidiol from the Cannabis plant that shows very promising results. Janne has supervised and mentored more than 20 Master and Ph.D. students and in 2019 she was honored with the innovation price at the Faculty of Science, SDU for all her collaborations both with academia and industry.
