Welcome to Fabian Haiden
IMADA welcomes Assistant Professor Fabian Haiden to the Centre for Quantum Mathematics and the Topology, Algebra, Analysis and Geometry Group.
We asked him a few questions about his research and reasons for joining Department of Mathematics and Computer Science (IMADA), University of Southern Denmark (SDU).
Why did you join IMADA and the Centre for Quantum Mathematics?
There is a kind of entrepreneurial spirit that comes with being part of a recently established center, which makes for a very exciting and rewarding work environment.
The focus on mathematics related to quantum theory means that all my colleagues at QM – world leading experts - are potential collaborators.
What is your current research focusing on?
One of the central lessons of quantum mechanics is that space is described by non-commutative algebra, in contrast to the commutativity ab=ba for usual numbers. One of the themes explored in my research is that this non-commutativity leads to an abstract type of structure known as a category.
My current research focuses on using these structures - in particular so-called derived categories and stability conditions - to gain new insights into classical problems.
Background
Fabian received obtained his PhD in Mathematics from the University of Vienna in 2015 under the supervision of Ludmil Katzarkov and Maxim Kontsevich. He obtained his MS degree in Mathematics in 2010 from the same institution.
Before joining SDU, Dr. Haiden held the highly prestigious Titchmarsh Research Fellowship at University of Oxford since 2019. After his PhD he also held the equally prestigious Benjamin Peirce Fellowship at Harvard University from 2015-2018.
In between Haiden has been a senior postdoc at University of Vienna, invited researcher at Institut des Hautes Etudes Scientifiques (IHES) and visiting associalte professor at University of Miami.
