Low attendance and low commitment in teaching is not an uncommon phenomenon at universities. Most university lecturers have experience with students who, instead of listening, talk 'off-topic' with each other, answer e-mails, are on Facebook, leave the room in the middle of the lecture for self-selected coffee breaks, or simply stay away from the teaching. At SDU Centre for Teaching and Learning (SDUUP) we work continuously to quality-assure our initiatives and to develop new methods to support the improvement of teachers’ digital competences. In this newsletter we dive into SDUUP’s experiences over recent years with arranging so-called learning circles locally and cross-institutionally, in collaboration with UCN and UCL Erhvervsakademi og Professionshøjskole. The use of learning circles has been found to be a good bet for a competency development format, collegial and practice-oriented, that will strengthen the teachers’ digital competencies.

Rolf Fagerberg is responsible for the innovation part of the course Formal Languages and Data Processing along with outreach coordinator Peter Bæksgaard Madsen, where students on the third year of the programme are required to develop an idea for a product and program a prototype. In the course, SDU Entrepreneurship Labs contribute a guest lecture on using Business Model Canvas in a practical setting, along with information on what they can offer the students after they have completed the course.

In general, Grith has found that MCQ is a good tool for exams when combined with other question types.

Mette Marie Hougaard Christensen has integrated multiple choice questions (MCQ’s) directly into her teaching. She describes MCQ’s as a great tool for engaging students and explains that you can avoid many of the challenges of the format if you spend time researching its strengths and weaknesses. Furthermore, she explains that it is easy to get started using MCQ’s in teaching environments.

Marit Carolin Clausen has used Flipped Learning to engage students during the lockdown in a course, where the practical teaching form was challenged by the limited possibilities of using a physical classroom. Marit’s way of teaching turned out to be very rewarding for the students, with many of them expressing their excitement in the course evaluation – some of them said they would prefer Marit’s model going forward instead of having every lesson in the course in a physical classroom.

At the TAL2020 conference, Alexander H. Treusch, Associate Professor at The Department of Biology, presented a way of conducting practice-based lab teaching during the difficult circumstances, caused by COVID-19 for most teachers at SDU. The method, Lab@Home, let students work on experiments in the Microbiology course, which could easily be carried out at home.

At the TAL2020 conference Tine Lynfort Jensen, Career and Employability Consultant with SDU RIO, and Jesper Piihl, Vice-Head of Department for Education, Department of Entrepreneurship and Relationship Management, presented The Student’s Journey. Jesper and Tine are part of the group behind The Student’s Journey and describe it as a dialogue and a constant reflection on how to create a holistic education, which in addition to academic knowledge gives the students an array of personal and professional qualifications.

Furthermore, they explained how they have worked with the UN’s SDG 12, which involves Responsible Consumption and Production.

Starting this January, SDU will get a new learning platform: itslearning. This means that all courses from February 1 will be supported by itslearning rather than Blackboard.
