Multiplicity

It is best practice for a trial to have a single pre-specified primary outcome and measure of effect, in order to minimize Type I error. However, it is often the case that the collected data can give a variety of useful insights, e.g. secondary outcomes, patient or intervention subgroups; but care is then needed when interpreting significance levels. Accounting for such "multiplicity" is often done poorly in randomized trials, and even more so in meta-analysis.
In this seminar, senior statistician David Fisher from the Medical Research Council Clinical Trials Unit at University College London will give a short presentation on ongoing work in this area from the perspective of meta-analysis in oncology, and will then facilitate a wider discussion.
