Multiplicity
When: 20 November 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM (CET)
Where: Zoom
It is best practice for a trial to have a single pre-specified primary outcome and measure of effect, in order to minimize Type I error. However, it is often the case that the collected data can give a variety of useful insights, e.g. secondary outcomes, patient or intervention subgroups; but care is then needed when interpreting significance levels. Accounting for such "multiplicity" is often done poorly in randomized trials, and even more so in meta-analysis.
In this seminar, senior statistician David Fisher from the Medical Research Council Clinical Trials Unit at University College London will give a short presentation on ongoing work in this area from the perspective of meta-analysis in oncology, and will then facilitate a wider discussion.
Clinical trials with integrity issues - how to identify them and reduce their impact on evidence-based medicine
When: Tuesday 29 October at 13:00 (CET)
Where: Zoom
There has recently been an increasing attention on how problematic trials with potentially untrustworthy data may adversely influence the medical literature. For example, by distorting meta-analysis results in systematic reviews.
Untrustworthy data can arise due to honest mistakes in data handling, but also intentionally through fabrication or falsification of data. Unfortunately, such trials are typically not detected using conventional risk of bias tools.
Professor Alison Avenell from the University of Aberdeen has considerable experience with integrity issues in clinical trials and has participated in the development of the REAPPRAISED checklist for assessing integrity issues in research papers, and is also involved in the development of the INSPECT-SR tool for detecting problematic trials in systematic reviews.
In this webinar, Professor Avenell will talk about which integrity checks to use with practical examples, and how to reduce the impact of these trials on results from systematic reviews.

Exploring Heterogeneity in Prevalence Reviews
When: Tuesday 19th March from 13:00 to 14:00 (CET)
Where: Online via Zoom
Does it make sense to pool prevalence studies together? For instance, what does it mean that the average risk of lower back pain during pregnancy is 59% based on 25 studies from different countries? Can we use existing statistical measures to determine how much the studies differ? And what does heterogeneity mean for our interpretation of pooled results? Celina Borges Migliavaca will help enlighten us on these topics in this webinar.
Surrogate Endpoints in Trials: Friend or Foe (NB new date)
When: Thursday 14th December 2023 from 13:00 to 14:00 (CET)
Where: Online via Zoom
Are you ready to dive into the fascinating world of clinical trials and medical research? Join us for an enlightening webinar on "Surrogate Endpoints in Trials: Friend or Foe" hosted by professor Rod Taylor from Glasgow University.
Surrogate outcomes have been heavily criticized but perhaps they are warranted in some cases?
Research seminar on missing evidence and publication bias
