Control And Protection in Smart Grids (CAP-SG)

Research within development and implementation of advanced control and protection approaches for grid-integration of renewable energy and energy storage in the context of smart grids.

With the high penetration of clean energy resources, the current power system faces significant challenges. A smart grid (SG) includes distributed energy resources (DER), energy storage systems (ESS) and adjustable loads, which are expected to maximize the flexibility while also decreasing the operation cost of such grids if properly coordinated. CAP-SG team dedicates its research work to the development and implementation of advanced control and protection approaches for the grid-integration of RES and ESS in the context of smart grids and microgrids.

The objectives of the CAP-SG are to:

  • The scientific field of the CAP-SG comprises analysis and design of electric and integrated energy systems including their planning, design and operation.
  •  A main goal of research is to develop methods and schemes to design, and analysis of protection, control, operation, and transient studies of power systems and microgrids, that can be used by engineers in the industry to solve actual problems.
  • Provides an environment for cutting edge electric power systems and technology research, prototyping, development, and demonstration.
