Research aim
Amyloidosis is a spectrum of disorders caused by abnormal folding and extracellular deposition of proteins. The deposits lead to tissue damage and organ dysfunction, particularly in the heart and kidneys. There are at least 35 different proteins that can cause amyloidosis: The most frequent ones are kappa and lambda light-chain immunoglobulins, serum amyloid A, and transtyretin. The clinical management depends entirely on the type of protein deposited and thus often requires high-risk therapeutic intervention. Application of mass spectrometry–based proteomic technologies for analysis of amyloid plaques has transformed the way that amyloidosis is diagnosed and has become the gold standard for amyloidosis subtyping in many amyloidosis centres worldwide.
Our aim is to improve and refine MS-based methods for amyloidosis subtyping.

Project examples
• Assessment of minimal residual disease in multiple myeloma by MS-based proteomics
• High throughput MS-methods for the clinical diagnosis and subtyping of systemic amyloidosis
Available infrastructures and competences
Available infrastructures for MS-based clinical diagnosis of amyloidosis includes laser-microdissection facilities for laser dissection of biopsies, and fully equipped pathological laboratory for the preparation of sections for staining amyloid positive biopsies, and supporting confirmative immune-electron microscopy analysis for the detection of amyloid fibrils.
Collaborators
We perform MS-based amyloidosis diagnosis and research in close collaboration with relevant clinicians and pathologists. Furthermore we collaborate closely with the Odense Amyloidosis Center, Odense University Hospital, AmyC.
