The overall purpose of studies conducted at the LUFTvej, Pulmonary Research Unit Vejle is to advance research in the treatment of lung diseases in order to improve treatment options in the future. In recent years, research has focused primarily on the use of biological drugs. Biological drugs are used to treat various diseases, including selected lung diseases, when other treatments have proven to be ineffective.
In addition, research is being conducted on the effectiveness of new inhalation medications and tablet treatments for patients with lung disease. For most studies, placebo-controlled studies are conducted where patients receive either the active drug or a placebo (a medication without medical effect). Both the patient and the staff are blinded, which means that only the pharmaceutical company knows which treatment each patient is receiving in the studies.
Furthermore, the research unit has several PhD students who are conducting research on epidemiological and clinical aspects of pulmonary medicine, including lung cancer. Medical students are also affiliated with the research unit on an ongoing basis.
