Artistic Improvisation: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Theory, Practice and Implementation

This project explores improvisation in its various senses and guises. It especially focuses on bringing together perspectives on the theory of improvisation with perspectives on its practice. The project began with funding from The Joint committee for Nordic Research Councils in the Humanities and Social Sciences (NOS-HS, 2016-18), and led to the publication of The Philosophy of Improvisation on Routledge as well as several other publications. We continue to collaborate with improvising musicians and dancers and are now investigating how this art form can improve theory and practice in psychiatry and music therapy. In doing so, we collaborate with the Danish National Center for Art and Mental health as well as leading music therapy research centers in Denmark and Norway.

For a recent short film on these issues, see "Moving Together: Improvisation in Art, Health and Society"
