The Intelligent Patient Journal (2020-2023)

The Intelligent Patient Journal (IPJ) is an interdisciplinary research project between SDU Robotics and Odense University Hospital. The project aims at automating the time-consuming job of finding patient information in the free text of electronic health records (EHR).

EHRs store important clinical information about a patient’s disease history. This information is important for a medical doctor before any kind of consultation with a patient. However, the free text of the EHR is often very long, making it impossible for the doctor to go through it all in acute or stressed situations where time is a scarce resource. Using methods from natural language processing, this project develops deep learning algorithms that automatically and continuously extracts relevant information from EHRs and presents it to the medical staff. This fast identification of critical information makes it possible to carry out patient treatment immediately, and it makes sure that the medical staff have the information they need to perform the correct treatment. Moreover, medical doctors will save time by not having to read through the long EHRs – time that can be allocated to patient contact.
