Facts, key figures and strategy

The Faculty of Science is primarily located at the university's main campus in Odense, with additional research facilities in Kerteminde and Svanninge Bjerge.

Key figures

  • The Faculty of Science has 11 Bachelor's degree programmes and 12 Master's degree programmes, including one part-time Master's degree programme for working professionals, as well as a 1-year academic postgraduate programme. 

    The Faculty of Science received a total of 1,621 applications for its Bachelor's degree programmes in 2022. 22.1% of the applicants had a Science programme at the University of Southern Denmark as their first priority. The faculty received a total of 755 applications for it Master's degree programme and the academic postgraduate programme.

    Overall, the Faculty of Science admitted 740 full-time students in 2022, including 399 Bachelor's degree students, 329 Master's degree students and 13 academic postgraduate students. The faculty also admitted one part-time Master's degree student and 30 part-time lifelong learning students.

    The faculty's student population in 2022 totaled 2080 students (as of 1 October 2022). Of the total student population in 2022, 9.9% were not Danish citizens. Furthermore, 3.6% of the students were enrolled in lifelong learning programmes.

    In 2022, a total of 543 students graduated from a programme at the Faculty of Science. The distribution of the graduates was 50.6% Bachelors, 44.2% Masters, 2.6% who graduated from a 1-year academic postgraduate programme, and 2.6% who graduated from a lifelong learning programme.

    The Faculty of Science awarded 36 PhD degrees in 2022 and had a population of 162 PhD students at the end of 2022.

  • In 2021, the academic staff at the Faculty of Science made up 363 full-time equivalents (as of 31 December 2021), with the technical and administrative staff making up 181 full-time equivalents.

  • The Faculty of Science has 4 departments, 15 research centres and a number of other research units.

  • The Faculty of Science had a turnover of DKK 427.5 million in 2022. External funding accounted for 52.2 %

Strategy

The strategy of the Faculty of Science for the period 2021-2025 consists of 3 tracks.

  • We want to strengthen our professional and administrative skills and the collaboration across the faculty and between all education programmes to obtain a high degree of learning from each other to benefit the well-being of every individual and to benefit the working and study environments at the faculty.

  • We want to maintain and strengthen the position of our education programmes in the Danish STEM education landscape. With a focus on skills, the faculty wants to take a big step forward for our education programmes with significant positive effects on both admission, retention and employment.

History

Already when the then Odense University was established in 1966, there was a faculty for natural and medical sciences. Research in the natural science, however, only took place to the extent necessary to provide medical students with research-based teaching. Not until 1974 was the Faculty of Science established as an independent main area.

In the 1990s, the faculty established several academic engineering programmes, which led to the faculty changing its name to the Faculty of Science and Engineering.

In 2006, when the Odense University College of Engineering was incorporated into the University of Southern Denmark, it was decided to split the Faculty of Science and Technology. Thus, the Faculty of Science was established in its current form.
