Lars P. Schødt Riber has been appointed as a clinical professor in cardiac surgery at OUH and SDU.
Lars Riber, 49 years old, completed his specialization in thoracic surgery at Aarhus University Hospital in 2012. Following his specialization, he was employed at the cardiac surgery department at OUH. After five years as a senior resident, he became a consultant and later took on a functional responsibility in the field. As the leading consultant in the specialized field, Lars Riber handles all types of cardiac surgeries performed at OUH.
Lars Riber has primarily been involved in translational research, which focuses on research that can be directly applied in treatment. He also has extensive knowledge and experience in animal experimental research from Aarhus, Foulum, and Odense. Lars Riber has published over 50 peer-reviewed articles and has written chapters for textbooks such as "FADL's Kirurgi" and the upcoming "Munksgaard's Kirurgiske Kompendium." Additionally, he has received awards for translational research, the J. Maxwell Chamberlain Memorial Paper for General Thoracic Surgery, and the honorary grant "Direktør Viggo E. Thiesen & hustrus Legatfond" (Thiesen's Grant).
During his specialization, he defended his PhD thesis, "Feasible, practical and financial evaluation of postoperative prophylaxis with amiodarone for the prevention of atrial fibrillation," at Aarhus University in 2007. Lars Riber has continued his active clinical scientific approach to the field and, as a result, has been awarded the title of "dr.med." (Doctor of Medical Science) since 2018, following the defense of his dissertation titled "Prevention and impact of postoperative atrial fibrillation after Cardio-Thoracic surgery."
Lars Riber has cultivated numerous scientific areas with various collaborators, participating in national, Scandinavian, and local scientific collaborations. He is also set to host the Scandinavian Association of Thoracic Surgeons' annual conference at the Odeon in Odense in September. Currently, he supervises three ongoing PhD projects and has several more in the pipeline, set to start within the next six months. Additionally, the research unit has several talented medical students and nurses affiliated with it, as well as its first undergraduate engineering student.
Alongside his active research career, Lars has focused on developing himself as a competent leader for the benefit of collaborators and younger researchers. As such, he obtained a master's degree in public leadership in 2022 and has taken courses on research management at CBS (Copenhagen Business School) and SDU (University of Southern Denmark).
