New Professor of Epidemiology
Katrine Hass Rubin is the new professor of epidemiology at the research unit OPEN at Odense University Hospital and the Department of Clinical Research, SDU.
Katrine Hass Rubin is also head of research at the research unit OPEN, University of Southern Denmark (SDU), as well as Leader of the OPEN Registry & Statistics group at OPEN (Open Patient data Explorative Network) at Odense University Hospital.
In her new professorship, Katrine Hass Rubin will focus on research to strengthen and promote the use of national health registers for the development of algorithms for identifying individuals at risk. This aligns perfectly with Katrine Hass Rubin's interest in identification and, more importantly, prevention of diseases. The focus of the professorship will also be on testing and working towards finding the proper process for implementing automated data-driven decision support systems in primary care. This will be done in close collaboration with, among others, the Research Unit for General Practice at SDU.
Since obtaining her PhD in 2013, Katrine Hass Rubin's research has focused on fracture epidemiology, screening, early/risk identification, and prevention, including the development of prediction models and algorithms for identifying individuals at risk for various disease groups using large national health registers. She has been involved in the development of FREM (Fracture Risk Evaluation Model), which can estimate patients' risk of sustaining an osteoporosis-related fracture based on information on osteoporosis risk factors obtained from Danish health registers.
Therefore in the forthcoming professorship, Katrine wish to continue research activities that strengthen the testing and implementation of these data-driven models in both primary and secondary health care. All to contribute to the body of knowledge on how to best support general practitioners in data-driven case finding of chronic diseases, as this approach can be used as proof-of-concept for secondary prevention of chronic disease in a broader sense.
In November 2013, Katrine Hass Rubin defended her PhD thesis, which aimed to investigate whether risk assessment tools could potentially be used in the clinical management of osteoporosis to identify women at risk of osteoporotic fractures.

Development of a decision support tool
In the new professorship, Katrine will further improve FREM and work towards the development of a decision support tool that has the potential to be implemented in general practice. The tool should be able to draw the attention of general practitioners to a patient's status if it changes to fall into a risk category for osteoporosis.Therefore in the forthcoming professorship, Katrine wish to continue research activities that strengthen the testing and implementation of these data-driven models in both primary and secondary health care. About Katrine
Katrine Hass Rubin graduated as a physiotherapist in 1999 from the School of Physiotherapy in Copenhagen. She worked as a clinical instructor in physiotherapy in the psychiatric department, first at Kommunehospitalet in Copenhagen and later at Amager Hospital. Through her work as a clinical instructor in physiotherapy, she has been dedicated to the development and dissemination of knowledge to new physiotherapy students during their internships throughout their education.
