Dagmar Beier appointed as new professor of neurology with a focus on headache disorders

With twenty years of research experience in neuro-oncology and headache disorders, Dagmar Beier has established herself as one of the leading experts in the field.

Dagmar Beier is an experienced neurologist with broad clinical expertise and a dedicated and experienced researcher. She was born in Southern Germany and studied medicine at the Eberhard-Karls University in Tübingen, Germany. She became a specialist in neurology in 2010. After her specialist training in neurology, she moved to Denmark with her family and began her Danish career as a consultant and head of the Headache Clinic and Neuro-oncology Clinic at Odense University Hospital in 2012.

Dagmar Beier is currently focusing on two areas of research: On the one hand, idiopathic intracranial hypertension, a specific headache disorder caused by increased pressure in the cerebrospinal fluid, associated with chronic headaches and a significant risk of persistent visual and cognitive disability, and on the other hand, medulloblastomas in adults, an extremely rare and highly malignant brain tumour that is difficult to cure.

'Working with such rare diseases requires a good network of collaborators, both in Denmark and abroad,' admits the newly appointed professor. Her current projects aim to improve the diagnosis of idiopathic intracranial hypertension, with a particular focus on faster and more accurate methods to avoid permanent damage to vision. One of her most important projects in the coming years will be to research whether it is possible to prevent or treat the cognitive sequelae that many patients suffer from after their illness.

As part of her professorship, Dagmar Beier will expand her research focus to other types of chronic headaches, with a special focus on early identification, treatment and prevention. 'If I succeed with my research, I can find ways to prevent the development of severe chronic headaches and treat patients before they are referred to us at Odense University Hospital,' says Professor Beier.
