Søren Fisker Schmidt is an Associate Professor at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University of Southern Denmark since 2021. He obtained his PhD in 2012 and performed his first postdoctoral studies under supervision of Prof. Susanne Mandrup at the University of Southern Denmark. Here, he worked on transcriptional plasticity of adipocytes and pancreatic beta cells in response to inflammation and hyperglycemia. In 2016, he obtained an NNF Fellowship for Research Abroad to join the Institute of Diabetes and Cancer, Helmholtz Center Munich headed by Prof. Stephan Herzig. Here, he studied transcriptional coordination of intra- and intrahepatic cellular crosstalk in fasting and cancer cachexia.

Research in Søren’s group focuses on transcriptional coordination of macrophage diversity and plasticity in metabolic health and disease. As a member of Center for Functional Genomics and Tissue Plasticity (ATLAS), a key research focus in the group is understanding cellular diversity and communication determining differential interindividual phenotypic outcomes of obesity. This includes how individuals that store excess energy in lower body fat depots are protected from obesity-associated complications, such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and metabolic (dysfunction) associated fatty liver disease “MAFLD”.
