Welcome to the website of TAL2016. The overall focus of the conference is active teaching and learning which has been chosen as the underlying principle of education at SDU. This conference is designed to help practitioners inspire each other, disseminate knowledge and share experiences on how to facilitate students’ active participation and learning in accordance with the underlying principles of education at SDU.
Time and place: Tuesday November 1, 2016 from 9:00-16:00 at the University of Southern Denmark (Odense), auditorium O100. Participation is free of charge upon registration .

The aims of the conference are to give the participants the opportunity to
- share, document, demonstrate, substantiate, and analyse their own examples of active teaching and active learning
- be inspired to further refine their own current practice or to develop new practices within active teaching and active learning
Conference theme:
This year the conference has a special focus on active teaching and learning in student induction and in the first-year experience in higher education.
Students’ first-year experience is crucial to their sense of belonging and to their succeeding throughout their studies. Students arrive at university in all their diversity; they bring with them different backgrounds, cultures and prerequisites for learning. For universities to successfully manage the students’ transition process into the university we have to meet and acknowledge this diversity right from study induction and throughout the entire study programme.
TAL2016 welcomes all teachers, educational developers, staff in student affairs, researchers, librarians and students to contribute practical examples, experiences and research on how to support students’ first-year learning and transition process. The presentation in parallel sessions will primarily focus on four tracks:
Main theme - Active teaching and learning
- Examples of active teaching and learning in student induction and throughout the entire study programme.
Special focus – Student induction and the first-year experience
- Designing the first-year experience – Curriculum and programme development; designing for engagement; motivation; self-regulated learning and retention; students as partners etc.
- Supporting transition - Supporting students’ acquisition of study skills; social and academic integration; supporting the transition from high school/college to HE, from bachelor to master level, from education to employment.
- Student diversity and widening participation strategies - Examples of widening participation strategies that acknowledge and build on student diversity.
Format and language: The conference comprises one keynote lecture by Sally Kift, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), James Cook University, Australia and parallel sessions with short communications and workshops covering the four tracks of the conference.
Keynote speakers and plenary debates will be in English. There will be parallel sessions in both English and Danish.
- In the short communication sessions each presenter will have 10 minutes to share an experience and and reflections, followed by 10 minutes of discussion.
- The duration of the workshops will be an hour and a half.
Conference proceedings: Speakers will subsequently have the possibility of having their presentations included in the conference proceedings.
