Media

The Media research group is a space for collective thinking about a world where media permeates all aspects of everyday life as well as the broader operations of culture, politics and economy at a global scale. Our perspective is rooted in the idea that media are not just a product of society or technology, but also co-shape reality and can thus foster change.

Participants
We embrace a forward-looking approach while grounding our research in a deep historical understanding of the materiality and sociality of media and their practices. We provide solid theorising based on a critical examination of the evolving landscape of modern communication. We are acutely aware of the ongoing dissolution of legacy media, the disruption of traditional business models, and the problematic aspects of increased mediatization, datafication, surveillance and the looming fears surrounding AI.

Our team possesses expertise in distinct media domains including film, television, interactive gaming, auditory media, social media, and museum communication. We are invested in tracking the dynamic trajectories of these respective industries and their cultural fields. We take pride in our expertise in understanding contemporary media usage, with specific insights into the needs and behaviours of diverse groups, including children, older people and people with disadvantages. We are also dedicated to addressing societal challenges, such as climate change, and are currently pioneering innovative approaches to the greening and sustainability of the media industries.

Our overarching goal is twofold: to produce exceptional research that advances our understanding of media in both applied contexts and theoretical realms, and to actively engage with the public to foster critical media literacy. Additionally, we are committed to nurturing the next generation of media practitioners through our educational endeavours. Our research group boasts a broad scientific reach, and a willingness to be socially engaged and to play a role in healing a fractured world.
