Large energy project launched at MCI

A new international project will secure efficient use of local energy resources

In cooperation with 15 international partners, The Mads Clausen Institute at SDU has launched a new project, which will increase the use of local energy sources and reduce the dependency of remote fossil energy fuels. The project is called carpeDIEM and is based on the principle idea of developing technology based on a distributed intelligent system, which efficiently uses local energy resources, such as solar panels from single-family homes, in smaller power grids, which local suppliers and consumers can connect to. The project, which had its start-up meeting earlier this summer, is financed by the EU Regional Development Fund by 1.55 Mill. Euro from the Interreg5a-funds.

The project will explore the potential of local energy exploitation in the Interreg5a region, which in Denmark includes Region Syddanmark and Region Sjælland, and in Germany the districts Nordfriesland, Ostholstein, Plön, Rendsburg-Eckernförde and Schleswig-Flensburg as well as the cities Flensburg, Kiel, Lübeck and Neumünster. Existing models for and measurements of energy consumption patterns will be analysed, and henceforth the population will be informed about the potential for energy exploitation and the financial advantages. Further, the system will be tested at two demonstration sites. One of these sites may very well be the implementation of the Green Water project in the large-scale harbor front project in Sønderborg. Green Water, which is an MCI-project, is indeed based on decentralized energy supply by means of sea water.

Research centres solve tasks
The Mads Clausen Institute in Sønderborg runs the project but will also develop the underlying distributed control and the intelligent energy flow management system as well as implement these in mechatronic components that are to connect energy consumers and suppliers together. The company CBB Software GmbH is responsible for communication in the distributed system, data collection and modelling. Zentrum für Nachhaltige Energiesysteme (ZNES) at Europauniversität Flensburg is in charge of developing a model of the regional energy system. Kompetenz- und Wissenschaftszentrum für intelligente Energienutzung (WiE) at Fachhochschule Lübeck will find the necessary intrastructure for intelligent energy conversion and exploitation as well as develop concepts allowing for conversion from a central supply to a decentral supply.

The project runs for three years.

The project partners are: SEAS-NVE, Dansolar, Kalundborg Kommune, IHK Flensburg, Udviklingsråd Sønderjylland, ProjectZero, AT SOLAR, Danfoss, EE.SH / WFG-NF, H-TEC, Kreis OH, Nordgroon, SCS Hohmeyer, Project Green Water, Green TEC Campus, Enrgie Impulse Owl, Schwartauer Werke.
