Bioeconomic foundation for the development of sustainable natural resources
Brooks Alexandra Kaiser, in collaboration with researchers at the University of British Colombia, will develop economic analysis tools, sustainable exploitation of marine resources and bioeconomic models for the decreasing pH-levels.
The decreasing pH-levels in the seas are expected to have large, but also very uncertain, impacts on ecosystems and the natural resources located in the oceans. However, the current bioeconomic models are not very good as they do not take uncertain factors into account. Therefore, a risk may occur regarding ignoring potential for more sustainable use of resources.
The interdisciplinary research opportunities at the Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries at University of British Columbia are unique to resource economics. They allow both current and future research on marine resources at SDU and in Denmark to be strengthened.
Solutions will be explored which allow effective decision-making for sustainable development as well as societal well-being under otherwise unmanageable uncertainties. The solutions’ focus is to build robust society as well as sustainable diversification of the use of natural resources.
The research project will take place over 6 months with regular interaction with the Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries and the Vancouver School of Economics. Collaborative research connecting Denmark and University of British Colombia, will create a prototype for future research on how bioeconomic models can meet sustainability goals.
The project is funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark, with a grant of: 153,360 kr.
