Torben Bjerregaard Larsen Appointed Clinical Professor in Translational Medicine and Innovation

A new professorship focusing on translational medicine and innovation has been established at Sygehus Lillebælt and the Institute of Regional Health Research (IRS) at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU).

Torben Bjerregaard Larsen, a distinguished figure in clinical biochemistry, cardiology, epidemiology, and translational medicine, has been appointed to this role, bringing a wealth of experience and expertise. Previously, he held a professorship at Aalborg University since 2018.

In his new position, Larsen will lead Sygehus Lillebælt's initiatives in translational medicine, emphasizing research that can swiftly transition into patient treatment. His focus on data-driven research aims to bridge the gap between research and clinical application, enhancing innovative treatment methods and patient care. This appointment underscores Sygehus Lillebælt's commitment to advancing medical research and clinical practice, fostering strong research environments crucial for recruiting and retaining talent and maintaining specialized functions.

Larsen's appointment coincides with significant investments by Sygehus Lillebælt, IRS, and SDU in translational research and innovative healthcare solutions. His collaborative efforts across these institutions are expected to bolster research in translational medicine and innovation.

"I joined Sygehus Lillebælt in October 2023, and we already have extensive research collaborations with colleagues in Clinical Biochemistry, Oncology, Internal Medicine, Cardiology, Nuclear Medicine, Radiology, and Vascular Surgery. Our broad research portfolio, primarily based on local and regional data, contributes to high-level international research," says Larsen.

Professor Ph.D. Torben Bjerregaard Larsen has a robust background in both academia and clinical practice. He earned his medical degree from Aarhus University in 1993 and specialized in clinical biochemistry with a focus on thrombosis and haemostasis. Early in his career, he worked in general practice and various medical specialties, including ENT, pediatrics, clinical genetics, and several surgical and medical departments. His clinical and research work, particularly in thrombosis, cardiovascular medicine, pharmacotherapy, and diagnostic methods, has significantly advanced the understanding and treatment of cardiovascular diseases.

Larsen maintains close collaborations with prestigious institutions such as Brigham & Women's Hospital (Boston, US), Harvard Medical School, University of Connecticut (US), Birmingham University (UK), Liverpool University (UK), University of Mainz (DE), Hamburg University (DE), and Cardiff University (UK). These partnerships have facilitated exchange programs for many of his Ph.D. students. He has authored over 250 scientific publications and holds an H-index of over 60.

Born in Aarhus, Larsen is married with three adult children. He resides in Mols and enjoys nature, literature, and gastronomy, valuing time spent with friends and family.
