Fluid Mechanics and Heat Transfer

This program covers either one or two semesters with start either February 1st or September 1st.

Preferred student profile

Master students in Physics, Chemical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering.

Background and interest within the areas of Fluid Mechanics and Heat Transfer. Basic knowledge in Fluid Mechanics and Heat Transfer through introductory courses. Preferably advanced skills within experimental and/or computational fluid dynamics (CFD).

Research topics:

  • Drone aerodynamics
  • Multiphase flow
  • Convective heat transfer
  • Phase change materials
  • Conjugate heat transfer
  • Electronics cooling and heat sink design

Description

The focus of the research is to contribute to the improvement of:

  • environmental issues by e.g. reducing the pesticide use in agriculture or reduction of pollution from diesel engines
  • energy storage by e.g. use of phase change materials and advanced design methods
  • energy efficiency by e.g. optimised heat sink and heat exchanger design

Within fluid mechanics, the research topics are within aerodynamics, turbulence, liquid jet formation, atomization, transport of droplets and sprays, drop impact on surfaces and aerodynamic drag on particles and surfaces.
Within heat transfer, the research topics are within convective heat transfer, conjugate heat transfer, phase change, heat sinks, heat exchangers, electronics cooling and high heat flux cooling for fusion energy applications.

Students will be working with a specific research topic depending on individual interest and background. The project will be related to ongoing research projects or in connection with new innovative project ideas.

The studies can be conducted by experimental, as well as computational methods (CFD). Engineering problems will be solved in teams together with researchers from SDU Mechanical Engineering and in most cases with project partners from industry.

The results of your research will be made available to other researchers through international publications in relevant scientific journals.
